MONOGRAMMING EIQUETTE TIPS
The most conventional monogram arrangement consists of three letters: A larger central letter, flanked by two smaller letters, one on each side. There are two styles available for multi letter monograms: same size lettering [horizontal] and multi-sized lettering [diamond-shaped].
For a horizontal monogram pattern, where each letter is the same height, the letters are embroidered with the order of the actual name: first name or Christian name, middle name, surname or last name.
Typically in a diamond-shaped monogram for an individual with three initials available the arrangement would be that the center letter is larger and represents the individual's surname or last name, with the letter on the left representing the first name or Christian name, and the letter on the right representing the middle name.
Tips for married ladies, brides-to-be, newlyweds, or married couples seeking personalized items:
Say that Katherine L. Jones marries John R. Smith. They decide to have their items monogrammed in a diamond pattern and then choose to blend their individual initials into a common monogram: JSK or KSJ where their last name goes in the middle with their first initials on either side. Which spouse's initial goes first is a matter of preference for the couple. To have their items monogrammed in a horizontal pattern, the couple should choose JKS or KJS, where the couple's first names are followed by the last. Again, the order of the initials is the couple's preference.
However, if Katherine wants her own monogram on a few items she has a few more choices:
Diamond - KSJ: her first and maiden names flank her married name,
Horizontal - KS: her first and married names; KJS: her first, maiden and married names; or KLJ should Katherine opt not to change her name and use her original initials.
Typically, each member of the household sharing the same surname would have their own monogram.
Two-letter monograms utilize the same size letter [horizontal monogram pattern] where each letter is the same height and the letters are embroidered in the order of the actual name: first name or Christian name followed by the surname or last name.
The oversized one-letter 3-inch high script is popular again. Remember the “L” emblazoned across the left chest of Laverne’s sweater?
Individuals with more than three initials, hyphenated or blended surnames, or a surname with apostrophes create interesting challenges. Please contact us for information on creating these monogram arrangements.
